Have you heard of the SOAP model before? SOAP is an acronym for:

Scripture – Write out the scripture that most spoke to you that day.
Observation – Describe the facts relating to the scripture such as who wrote it, what was going on at that time in history, and how it was written to.
Application – How does this scripture apply to your own life.
Prayer – Your personalized prayer regarding the scripture.

It is a wonderful addition to your daily devotions. The goal is to take one scripture you read each day and dissect it. There are so many benefits to this.

  • You go deeper into God’s word.
  • You make it personal.
  • Years down the road you will be able to turn back and see exactly what God was speaking to you.

Here is one of my past SOAP devotions:

S

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want, He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” Psalm 23:1,2

O

David is writing out of his own experience as a shepherd. Sheep are completely dependent on their shepherd for provision, guidance, and protection. The Lord can be trusted to lead us, restore us, and give us refreshing. He is our good shepherd.

A

When I am tired and weary all I need to do is lean upon God. He will refresh my soul. He cares for me tenderly. He is my trusted shepherd. This is no one greater who could lead me and he lovingly does so.

P

“Lord, refresh me, restore me. I am your child, your sheep. Lead me by the still waters and give me rest. I trust you. I love you. Thank you for your protection, provision, guidance, and peace.”

We would love to hear some of your SOAP devotions.
